Damistan Mosque Proposal Sparks Debate Over Public Green Space

The proposed Damistan mosque project has reopened discussions about balancing community services with the protection of public green spaces in Bahrain. Members of the Northern Municipal Council recently reviewed the government’s response regarding a request to reallocate land in the Damistan area for a new mosque. The issue has drawn attention from residents who say the neighborhood needs additional religious facilities.

Zainab Al-Darazi, a member of the Northern Municipal Council, said the council discussed the matter during its latest session. The proposal involves changing the use of part of a public park located on property number 10032764 in Block 1017. Council members had previously approved the recommendation unanimously before sending it to the Ministry of Municipalities and Agriculture for review.

According to Al-Darazi, the ministry rejected the request for now. Officials based their decision on the government’s wider policy to expand green areas and protect public spaces across the country. Authorities continue to prioritize environmental projects and urban greenery as part of long-term development plans.

Despite the rejection, the council plans to continue discussions with the ministry. Members want officials to reconsider the proposal after reviewing additional documents and studies prepared by the council. The report outlines the neighborhood’s growing demand for a mosque and explains the importance of providing accessible religious services for local residents.

Al-Darazi stressed that the council understands the importance of preserving parks and agricultural areas. However, she noted that residents also require essential community facilities. She explained that the council hopes to find balanced solutions that address both environmental goals and public service needs.

The council member added that the proposed mosque would support residents in the area by offering a suitable place for worship and community gatherings. She also said local families had repeatedly requested such a facility in Damistan. As a result, the council considers the issue an important local priority.

The debate surrounding the Damistan mosque project reflects broader discussions taking place in many urban communities. Governments often face pressure to expand infrastructure while also preserving public recreational spaces. In Bahrain, officials continue searching for solutions that support both environmental sustainability and population needs.

Council representatives confirmed they will remain in contact with relevant authorities in the coming period. They aim to reach an agreement that serves the public interest and responds to the expectations of Damistan residents. Community leaders also hope future discussions will produce alternatives that satisfy all parties involved.

For now, the future of the Damistan mosque project remains under review as municipal leaders and government officials continue negotiations over land allocation and development priorities.
