Qatar and the United Arab Emirates have strengthened their Gulf air defence systems to counter increasing missile and drone threats. Both countries signed defence agreements with Ukraine to leverage its expertise in intercepting unmanned aerial systems. Gulf air defence capabilities are now a central priority for Doha and Abu Dhabi amid regional tensions.
During the Doha ceremony, Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. They discussed joint technology development, exchange of expertise, and deployment of anti-drone units. Qatar’s Defence Ministry confirmed that the agreement includes joint investments, training programs, and enhanced missile and drone interception strategies.
Earlier, UAE officials finalized a similar deal with Ukraine to improve Abu Dhabi’s drone defence readiness. Ukrainian teams have already deployed experts to both countries to train local forces and provide real-world counter-drone tactics. Gulf defence systems will now combine advanced local capabilities with Ukraine’s battlefield-tested experience against drone threats.

The agreements come amid escalating attacks by Iran in the Gulf, which Tehran claims are retaliation for US-Israeli operations. Analysts note that civilian areas remain at risk, making strengthened defence essential. Gulf leaders emphasize that proactive air defence measures protect not only infrastructure but also regional stability.
Qatar and UAE officials stressed that Gulf air defence agreements strengthen diplomatic ties and foster regional security collaboration. The partnerships include joint exercises, real-time coordination, and cost-effective alternatives to expensive missile interceptors like Patriot and THAAD systems.
Experts say these agreements position Qatar and UAE as leaders in regional drone defence. Ukraine benefits financially while Gulf nations gain practical and affordable solutions to counter ongoing threats. Gulf defence measures are expected to continue expanding as regional tensions persist.
Gulf air defence is now central to the strategies of Qatar and UAE, ensuring they remain prepared for evolving security challenges. Both countries highlight the importance of readiness, cooperation, and investment in cutting-edge defence technologies.
