Iraqi Forces Launch Operation Against PMF Headquarters Near Babylon

Iraqi forces launch operation against the Popular Mobilization Forces’ (PMF) headquarters in Jurf al-Sakhr, near Babylon province. The raid, carried out south of Baghdad near Hillah city, resulted in at least two fatalities, according to Iraqi security officials.

The operation targeted a PMF base historically tied to several militia organizations. Authorities confirmed the deaths but did not release the identities of those killed or further details on the assault.

Tensions have been rising between Baghdad and certain PMF units. These strains are part of a broader regional crisis involving the US, Israel, and Iran, which has increasingly affected Iraqi territory. Since February 28, Iran-aligned militias operating within the PMF have launched multiple drone and rocket attacks against US forces in Iraq. In response, the US conducted strikes against militia positions, escalating military exchanges in the region.

Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani’s government faces mounting pressure. Officials must balance controlling armed factions formally integrated into Iraq’s security apparatus while preventing Iraq from becoming a battleground for the larger regional conflict. In this context, Iraqi forces launch operation signals Baghdad’s efforts to reassert authority and maintain stability.

Security analysts note that the operation may serve as a deterrent against further militia provocations. Moreover, it demonstrates Baghdad’s intent to reinforce sovereignty and prevent external actors from exploiting Iraq’s territory. Observers also suggest that similar operations could occur if tensions continue to escalate, particularly in PMF-held areas.

Local residents reported heightened security measures following the raid, including checkpoints and patrols in Jurf al-Sakhr and nearby villages. Emergency teams and local authorities coordinated to ensure civilian safety during the operation.

Overall, Iraqi forces launch operation highlights Baghdad’s proactive approach to internal security. The government aims to maintain order amid complex regional dynamics while curbing militia influence in strategic areas. The outcome of this operation will likely influence future security measures and political calculations in Iraq.
