Qatar has taken a major step in modernizing its naval defense by introducing the ULAQ armed unmanned surface vehicle to the Coast Guard. This system improves coastal security and allows Qatar to monitor, patrol, and protect its waters more effectively.
Delivered in December 2025 from Türkiye’s Ares Shipyard, the ULAQ 11 ISR/PSV variant passed testing before joining service. Qatar is the first export customer for this platform, showing the country’s commitment to defense growth. Developed by ARES Shipyard and Meteksan Defence, the platform can operate autonomously, semi-autonomously, or remotely, giving flexibility for different maritime tasks.
The 11-meter vessel uses twin diesel engines for speeds up to 35 knots and a 400-kilometer range. It carries a SARP-DUAL 12.7mm remotely operated gun, naval radar, electro-optical/infrared sensors, as well as secure communication systems. Operators control it from a shore station, allowing precise monitoring and quick action.
This move shows Qatar’s focus on unmanned systems to strengthen coastal safety. The Coast Guard will use the ULAQ for surveillance, intelligence, and patrol operations across the Persian Gulf. Experts say unmanned vehicles reduce risks for crews while giving more tactical options.
Globally, navies are adopting unmanned systems for scouting and limited combat tasks. Exercises by NATO, the U.S., and Turkish forces highlight the value of using unmanned platforms with manned fleets. Though still new in operations, these systems give countries a strategic advantage.
Qatar’s order also marks a win for Türkiye’s defense industry, which designed, tested, and exported the platform in just six years. Its modular design allows payload changes for specific tasks, increasing mission flexibility.
By adding the ULAQ to its Coast Guard, Qatar boosts regional defense and modern naval capabilities. The vessel strengthens surveillance, intelligence, and reconnaissance, supporting the country’s maritime safety plan.
The armed unmanned surface vehicle also shows Qatar’s investment in next-generation defense. With autonomous capabilities, the Coast Guard can act faster, cover more area, and maintain higher awareness.
