Dubai Inmates Win 4th Intercontinental Chess Cup for Prisoners

Dubai – In a remarkable achievement, inmates from the Dubai Police Punitive and Correctional Establishments have won the 4th edition of the prestigious Intercontinental Chess Cup for Prisoners. The victory came after competing against 115 teams from 51 countries. It was an online tournament held over three days last October.

The inmates were honored by André Vögtlin, Chair of the FIDE Social Commission. This commission promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion in chess globally. Vögtlin congratulated the winning team for their outstanding performance, recognizing their achievement on the international stage.

Lt. Col. Mohammed Abdullah Al Obaidli, Director of the Inmate Education and Training Department, expressed his gratitude to Vögtlin for visiting the UAE. Vögtlin personally acknowledged the success of the inmate chess team. Al Obaidli emphasized the Dubai Police’s dedication to providing inmates with opportunities. These opportunities include participating in various sports, intellectual games, and educational programs, both locally and internationally. He noted that such activities are essential for enhancing inmates’ physical fitness, directing their energy into productive pursuits, and making the most of their time.

“These initiatives also motivate inmates through individual and team competitions. An example is the annual Continental Chess Championship, where Dubai’s inmates compete every year,” Al Obaidli added.

Al Obaidli also commended the technical and operational teams of the General Department of Punitive and Correctional Establishments. He appreciated their continuous support and encouragement of the inmates’ participation in such enriching activities.
