Iraq Recovers Millions as Anti-Corruption Drive Intensifies

Iraq’s Commission of Integrity continues tracking corruption in Iraq by recovering $17.4 million in stolen funds. Moreover, officials stress that stronger investigative systems help recover assets faster and hold criminals accountable.

Additionally, the commission now has direct access to INTERPOL databases, which improves its ability to find wanted individuals worldwide. This step also speeds up stolen fund recovery, reducing delays in international tracking.

Furthermore, the Commission gained access to the Integrated Consular Affairs System (ICASS), run by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This system allows officials to see data on Iraqis living abroad, improving accuracy in finding fugitives and assets.

These measures aim to fight widespread corruption, which has cost Iraq hundreds of billions of dollars since 2003. For example, past scandals included the embezzlement of $2.5 billion from the Tax Authority. Similarly, large amounts of oil revenue were lost through corrupt deals.

In 2021, authorities revealed that $150 billion in oil revenues had been stolen since the US invasion. In addition, Transparency International ranked Iraq 140th out of 180 countries in 2024 for corruption, highlighting the urgent need for reform.

Since early 2025, the government has increased prosecutions of high-ranking officials, including ministers, governors, and parliament members. Consequently, citizens see stronger efforts to enforce accountability and recover public funds.

Experts note that tracking corruption in Iraq requires close coordination between national authorities and international agencies. By using global databases, Iraq can improve transparency and prevent future theft.

Moreover, public awareness is crucial for long-term success. Officials urge citizens to report fraud, while emphasizing that whistleblowers play a key role in uncovering corruption.

As Iraq continues tracking corruption in Iraq, authorities focus on improving systems, increasing transparency, and recovering stolen money. Therefore, these efforts protect public resources and support economic growth.

In conclusion, the Commission’s proactive approach shows Iraq’s commitment to fighting corruption. By combining modern tools, cooperation, and public engagement, the country strengthens its ability to defend national assets.
