Kuwait Upgrades Digital Repository to Boost Scientific Research

The Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) launched an upgraded digital repository, significantly advancing scientific knowledge across the country. This platform strengthens research systems and actively supports a knowledge-driven society.

Fadhila Taqi, head of KISR’s digital repository project, explained that the upgrade matches the institute’s strategic plan. She added that digital storage protects valuable knowledge, ensures continuity, and allows easy access for all researchers.

The improved Kuwait Digital Repository (KDR) uses modern technology to work faster, handle more content, and give researchers simpler and faster access. Moreover, it improves sharing of knowledge among national research centers.

The project began several years ago to preserve KISR’s scientific output. It initially focused on technical reports and documents about Kuwait’s research activities. As a result, these resources now provide a strong foundation for ongoing and future studies.

The first phase created a digital lab with specialized equipment and a system to manage digitization. In addition, KISR partnered with the Bibliotheca Alexandrina to add extra features, improving the system’s use, functionality, and overall accessibility.

Through this initiative, over 10,000 scientific and technical reports, studies, and government documents have been digitized. Therefore, the repository now provides open access to research, helping share knowledge nationally, regionally, and worldwide.

Taqi thanked the Bibliotheca Alexandrina for its continued support. She said the 2011 agreement allowed KISR to learn how to manage digital repositories, improve design, handle content, and make access simple and fast.

She highlighted that this achievement fits KISR’s plan for science and technology. Consequently, the upgraded KDR plays a key role in advancing scientific knowledge in Kuwait.

By combining modern tools, careful planning, international collaboration, and ongoing updates, KISR demonstrates a strong commitment to research quality. Furthermore, the repository helps Kuwait become a regional hub for scientific innovation, continuing to support advancing scientific knowledge for current and future generations.
