Bahrain Highlights Role of Sports Tourism at Regional UN Tourism Meeting

The Minister of Tourism emphasized the significant role that sports tourism plays in boosting the economy of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. Speaking at the 51st meeting of the Regional Committee of the United Nations Tourism Organization for the Middle East, the Minister highlighted how hosting major sporting events contributes to attracting investment and diversifying sources of income in the region.

The Minister underscored the importance of collaboration among GCC nations to promote sports tourism and strengthen intra-regional travel. With the Middle East witnessing an increasing number of international sports events, there is a strong opportunity to enhance cultural exchange while showcasing the rich heritage of the Gulf countries.

Bahrain’s Commitment to Sports Tourism

Sports tourism is a key pillar of Bahrain’s 2022-2026 tourism strategy, with a focus on bringing major global events to the Kingdom. The Minister noted that developing world-class sports infrastructure has played a crucial role in positioning Bahrain as a preferred destination for international tournaments. Investments in modern stadiums and multi-purpose sports complexes have significantly boosted Bahrain’s ability to host top-tier competitions.
