UAE-Russia relations have entered a new stage. President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s Moscow visit highlighted strategic cooperation. His meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin built on frequent high-level exchanges in recent years. These interactions reflect mutual respect and a shared vision for stronger ties.
In the past decade, the two leaders have met frequently. This latest visit followed Sheikh Mohamed’s participation in the BRICS Summit. It also followed President Putin’s official trip to Abu Dhabi. Each meeting advanced cooperation in trade, investment, security, and diplomacy. These developments show UAE-Russia relations remain a top priority for both nations.
Economically, the partnership is gaining momentum. Non-oil trade reached $11.5 billion in 2024, rising 5 percent from 2023. Russia exports precious metals, industrial goods, machinery, and agricultural products to the UAE, while the Emirates sends boats, furniture, electronics, and specialty goods to Russian markets. Both nations aim to double this trade within five years, a goal supported by recent agreements on investment and transport.
The UAE remains Russia’s largest Arab investor, representing more than 80 percent of total Arab investment, particularly in technology and infrastructure. Tourism also thrives, with 2 million Russians visiting the UAE in 2024. Cultural and human connections continue to reinforce UAE-Russia relations, enhancing trust and cooperation.
Diplomatically, the UAE plays a mediating role in regional and global issues. It has maintained a balanced stance during the Russia-Ukraine conflict, facilitating prisoner exchanges and promoting dialogue. Both nations share similar positions on the Middle East, advocating for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and supporting multilateralism.
Security cooperation is another pillar of UAE-Russia relations. Joint work includes counterterrorism, cybercrime prevention, and protecting cultural heritage. Training programs and strategic police dialogues strengthen these initiatives.
The partnership extends to international blocs like BRICS and OPEC+, where they coordinate policies and promote stability in energy markets. Together, they aim to shape a multipolar world order and drive peaceful resolutions to global challenges.
By aligning economic goals with shared diplomatic values, UAE-Russia relations are poised for continued growth, reinforcing the UAE’s role as a bridge-builder in global affairs.
