Food security projects in Al Dhahirah Governorate were the focus of a recent field visit by Dr. Saud bin Hamoud Al Habsi, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources. He toured several development initiatives in the Wilayats of Yanqul and Ibri to review progress and strengthen support.
Dr. Al Habsi was joined by Dr. Ahmed bin Nasser Al Bakri, Undersecretary of the Ministry; Sheikh Saeed bin Humaid Al Harthi, Wali of Ibri; and Engineer Salem bin Ali Al Amrani. Additionally, a group of ministry officials and the Chairman of the Omani Agricultural Society also accompanied the delegation.
To begin with, the minister visited the fish market project in Yanqul. This key infrastructure project, which is nearing completion, aims to improve seafood marketing. During the visit, officials explained the market’s components and its role in providing a healthy trading environment. As a result, the project supports the region’s seafood supply chain and boosts economic activity for local fishermen.
Next, the tour continued to the Dhahir Al Fawares area in Ibri. Here, the minister inspected a water dam developed through community partnerships. Moreover, specialists briefed him on the dam’s effectiveness in recharging groundwater and protecting farmlands and homes from flooding. Overall, this initiative highlights sustainable water management and strong local collaboration.
Afterward, Dr. Al Habsi visited the Gulf International Company’s large-scale egg production facility in Ibri. Notably, this investment represents one of the largest poultry ventures in the Gulf. It spans 18 million square meters and was established in 2019 at a cost of OMR26 million. Currently, the farm produces one million eggs daily. During the visit, officials walked the minister through production stages and technology used in poultry farming.
Furthermore, the minister praised such food security projects for supporting the local market and ensuring quality supplies. He emphasized that these initiatives clearly reflect Oman’s commitment to boosting national food reserves and achieving environmental sustainability.
In conclusion, Dr. Al Habsi reaffirmed the ministry’s ongoing support for private sector partnerships. He also acknowledged the critical role of communities in advancing agriculture and water projects. Ultimately, these efforts, he noted, are essential for securing Oman’s food future.
