Green Parliament Milestone: Bahrain’s Council Achieves Landmark ISO Certification

Green Parliament values are at the core of Bahrain’s latest achievement in environmental leadership. The Council of Representatives has earned ISO 14001:2015 certification, marking a major step in sustainable governance. This certification makes Bahrain’s Council the first parliamentary body in both the Middle East and Asia to receive such recognition.

The certification highlights Bahrain’s commitment to global environmental standards. It also showcases the country’s effort to lead legislative institutions toward sustainability. The Council’s success is a result of long-term planning and environmental awareness.

The Secretary General of the Council emphasized that this step supports Bahrain’s national strategy. It aligns with the Economic Vision 2030 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Bahrain is also pushing forward with climate targets, including reducing emissions by 30% by 2035 and achieving net-zero by 2060.

The achievement came after thorough preparation. The Council carried out a full environmental assessment and built a structured management system. This included identifying legal requirements, setting internal goals, and ensuring clear communication.

Next, the Council launched procedures to reduce environmental risks. These were followed by audits and external evaluations. An international body confirmed compliance, leading to the ISO 14001:2015 award.

Additionally, this Green Parliament initiative goes beyond certification. It involves ongoing efforts such as Green Parliament Week, educational workshops, and exhibitions. These events aim to engage both staff and the community in sustainable practices.

Other upcoming steps include planting trees on Council grounds and installing resource-saving devices. Furthermore, the Council plans to track daily energy use with new digital screens. These tools will help raise awareness and encourage energy responsibility.

Importantly, the Council also launched the “Towards a Paperless Council” campaign. This digital shift supports both efficiency and environmental goals.

Altogether, this recognition reinforces Bahrain’s regional leadership in environmental policy. It also strengthens cooperation among public institutions aiming for sustainability.

As part of the Green Parliament model, Bahrain continues to raise the bar for legislative sustainability. The Council’s example could inspire similar action across the region, paving the way for greener governance everywhere.
