Saudi Coffee Production Initiative Boosts Output with Advanced Farming Techniques

Saudi Arabia has taken a major step toward strengthening its agricultural sector with the launch of a new Saudi coffee production initiative. This project, led by Saudi Reef and Estidamah, focuses on expanding high quality coffee cultivation through innovative tissue culture technology.

The Saudi coffee production initiative aims to plant 50,000 seedlings by the end of 2025 while increasing coffee tree productivity by 30%. Additionally, it seeks to develop climate resilient coffee varieties, ensuring long-term sustainability.

The program began by identifying six superior genetic samples from coffee trees in Jazan, Asir, and Baha. Scientists then used these samples to produce 17,000 somatic embryos and 4,000 young plants. Currently, 1,200 plants are in greenhouse acclimatization, while another 400 seedlings are undergoing hardening.

To speed up growth, researchers introduced a bioreactor growth accelerator. This technology reduces manual labor while ensuring consistent, high quality plant development.

Majid Al-Brikan, a spokesperson for Saudi Reef, highlighted key achievements from the initiative. Researchers reassessed 82 genetic patterns, categorizing them into 12 distinct groups for better cultivation management.

The Saudi coffee production initiative also emphasizes knowledge sharing. Over 109 farmers have participated in study tours, while 200 stakeholders attended training workshops. A reference book on best farming practices is also in development to support local growers.

A major goal of the project is to create coffee plants that withstand harsh conditions. Scientists are developing disease resistant and drought tolerant strains to align with Saudi Arabia’s climate resilience goals.

The initiative has actively promoted Saudi coffee at international events, raising its profile in the global market. By combining advanced science with traditional farming expertise, the Kingdom aims to become a key player in specialty coffee production.

With strong government and research support, the Saudi coffee production initiative is set to transform local agriculture. Ultimately, this project will enhance food security, empower farmers, and position Saudi Arabia as a leader in sustainable coffee cultivation.
