Peaceful Nuclear Programme Discussed by UAE, IAEA

Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, the UAE’s Foreign Minister, met Rafael Grossi, head of the UN nuclear watchdog, for official talks. The meeting focused on cooperation between the UAE and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), particularly regarding the peaceful nuclear programme.

During the discussion, Sheikh Abdullah reaffirmed the UAE’s strong support for the IAEA’s mission. He highlighted the Emirates’ commitment to promoting nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

Additionally, the two officials addressed rising tensions in the region. Iran’s nuclear activity continues to raise international alarm. Despite long denying any interest in weapons, Iran faces accusations from both the IAEA and Israel. The IAEA recently reported that Iran’s uranium enrichment levels exceed what is needed for peaceful purposes.

Meanwhile, Israel has accused Tehran of actively seeking nuclear weapons. These concerns led to Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear sites last month. A ceasefire ended the 12-day conflict between Iran and Israel. However, the region remains tense. Former US President Donald Trump confirmed that US forces targeted three nuclear facilities in Iran. He claimed that the air and sea operation destroyed them completely.

Iran disputed those claims. Officials said the damage was minimal. IAEA Director Rafael Grossi also downplayed the extent of the destruction. Grossi stated that Iran’s nuclear facilities could regain capacity within months. He cautioned against assuming long-term setbacks.

In response, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that Tehran may resume high-level uranium enrichment. He insisted this was part of Iran’s peaceful nuclear programme.

Araghchi said Iran requires security guarantees before it returns to talks. He expressed fears of further attacks during negotiations. He also stated that enrichment is now a national symbol. Many Iranians, he said, see the peaceful nuclear programme as a point of pride.

As regional powers react, diplomacy remains crucial. The UAE’s consistent support for peaceful nuclear development reinforces its alignment with international standards. By discussing the peaceful nuclear programme, the UAE and IAEA are showing a united front. They aim to prevent conflict and promote safe energy use globally.
