Social protection systems were the focus of discussion as the Sultanate of Oman joined the Fourth Arab Forum for Equality 2025. Held in Algeria and organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), the forum emphasized inclusive solutions for inequality in the Arab region.
Oman’s Minister of Social Development, Dr. Laila Ahmed Al Najjar, represented the country at the forum. She participated in a high-level panel on financing social protection systems across the region. During her remarks, she shared Oman’s national experiences in improving equity and development.
Dr. Al Najjar explained Oman’s approach to expanding social protection systems. The country provides direct cash assistance to the elderly, orphans, children, widows, people with disabilities, and low-income families. These efforts aim to strengthen financial efficiency and widen social safety nets.
In addition, she stressed the need for stronger collaboration among public institutions, private companies, and civil society. According to Dr. Al Najjar, this integrated model helps extend protection to more vulnerable communities. She added that investment in these programs aligns with Oman Vision 2040.
Throughout the event, officials and experts discussed how social protection systems reduce inequality amid economic, political, and environmental crises. They also examined how these systems contribute to sustainable and inclusive development in the region.
Participants included ministers, government officials, private sector leaders, and civil society organizations. Together, they explored regional and global examples of successful programs. They highlighted best practices and shared innovative models for greater impact.
The forum featured sessions on protecting workers in the informal economy, addressing social needs during conflicts, and engaging stakeholders. Discussions also focused on solutions for strengthening social protection systems through global partnerships.
