AviLease expands its cargo fleet as part of its aggressive growth strategy in Saudi Arabia’s fast-evolving aviation sector. The company, which recently emerged as a major aviation lessor, has now made a strategic entry into the air cargo market.
On Monday, during the Paris Air Show, Airbus confirmed that AviLease placed a firm order for 10 A350 freighter aircraft. This addition marks a turning point for the Saudi-based lessor aiming to build a modern and sustainable cargo fleet. Notably, AviLease leads the fleet expansion with a forward-looking plan to serve both local and international carriers, effectively expanding cargo handling capacity.
Additionally, AviLease secured an option to purchase 11 more A350 freighters. If exercised, this would make the company one of the largest future operators of the next-generation widebody freighter. Edward O’Byrne, CEO of AviLease, emphasized that the move supports Saudi Arabia’s commitment to fleet modernization. He added that this deal ensures fuel-efficient solutions for airline partners across the globe as AviLease expands cargo operations.
Meanwhile, Airbus reported that total orders for its A350 freighter now stand at 73 aircraft. The A350F offers a highly competitive range of 4,700 nautical miles and a maximum payload of 120 tons. Moreover, Airbus highlighted that the aircraft will be 20% more fuel-efficient than Boeing’s legacy freighters.
Further, the A350F will feature the industry’s largest main deck cargo door. This unique feature allows for easier loading of large containers, including rare 20-foot units. Airbus explained that the composite airframe reduces the jet’s weight by over 50 tons compared to competing models, expanding AviLease cargo efficiency.
Importantly, AviLease expands its fleet as global demand for widebody freighters is increasing. The cargo sector is growing at around 4% annually, while older aircraft are rapidly aging out of service. AviLease’s decision positions the firm to capitalize on this opportunity and reshape regional cargo logistics by expanding its cargo operations.
Although Airbus has delayed the A350F’s rollout to late 2027, AviLease remains confident in the timeline. The aircraft’s superior design and performance give it a competitive edge over older freighters.
