Zain and Kuwait Dive Team Boost Biodiversity Protection on Um Al-Maradim Island

Zain Kuwait, together with the Kuwait Dive Team, is actively protecting Kuwait’s biodiversity. Recently, they organized a mission on Um Al-Maradim Island. The team installed marine moorings, monitored coral reefs, and cleaned the island’s beaches. These actions aim to safeguard sea turtle nesting grounds and other marine life.

The island serves as a refuge for thousands of marine species. However, pollution, unsustainable coastal activities, and rising sea temperatures threaten its delicate ecosystems. Therefore, installing marine moorings creates safe anchoring zones, reducing damage to coral reefs and seabeds.

Additionally, young volunteers and cadets from the Kuwait Dive Team joined the mission. Their participation emphasizes the importance of educating the next generation about sustainability and environmental responsibility. By learning through action, youth develop habits that help protect marine ecosystems for the future.

Zain and the Kuwait Dive Team have maintained a strong partnership for over 28 years. During this time, Zain has provided four fully equipped boats to support volunteer efforts. These missions have removed thousands of tons of waste and safeguarded tens of thousands of marine animals, clearly demonstrating a long-term commitment to protecting Kuwait’s biodiversity.

Furthermore, the Zain boat helps maintain moorings, lift fishing nets, clear debris, and monitor coral health. Volunteers also submit reports to authorities, ensuring that conservation efforts remain effective.

Zain’s sustainability plan goes beyond fieldwork. It focuses on reducing climate change effects, achieving carbon neutrality, and following environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards. Moreover, the company supports coral monitoring programs and youth education initiatives to increase environmental awareness.

Innovation plays a key role in these projects. For instance, the BeBot beach-cleaning robot, powered by renewable energy, collects litter, seaweed, and debris while leveling the sand. Past uses have successfully cleared large amounts of waste from Kuwait’s shores.

Through these combined efforts, Zain and the Kuwait Dive Team show leadership in protecting Kuwait’s biodiversity. Their work highlights how teamwork, technology, and long-term planning can create a lasting impact on the environment.
