The United Arab Emirates has launched the UAE 6G initiative, aiming to transform national connectivity and advance emerging technologies. The announcement was made during the inaugural meeting of the 6G Committee, hosted by the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA). The initiative emphasizes collaboration among government entities, telecom providers, universities, research centers, and global technology leaders.
The UAE achieved a major milestone in 2019 by rolling out 5G, becoming the first country in the region to do so. Today, 5G coverage exceeds 99.5% of populated areas, supporting over 10 million subscribers through more than 23,000 sites. Building on this foundation, the UAE 6G initiative aims to revolutionize connectivity by integrating digital and cognitive worlds.
The initiative focuses on leveraging artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and satellite networks. By doing so, it will enable future applications and foster a hyper-connected smart society. TDRA’s committee seeks to develop a comprehensive national 6G ecosystem that promotes innovation across multiple sectors.
Key goals include strengthening collaboration among national partners, establishing research programs at universities, and accelerating adoption of emerging technologies. Additionally, the initiative supports developing international 6G standards and specifications. A robust regulatory framework and integrated spectrum management will ensure the initiative meets next-generation technological requirements.
To achieve these objectives, two specialized subcommittees have been formed. The Research and Development Working Group will focus on advancing core technologies, while the Integration and Strategic Partnerships Working Group will oversee collaborations with national and international stakeholders. Together, these groups will help implement the vision of the UAE 6G initiative.
Officials emphasized that this project will create opportunities for innovation, economic growth, and global leadership in telecommunications. Furthermore, the initiative encourages knowledge sharing and capacity building within universities, research centers, and technology firms. It also aims to enhance digital skills among the UAE workforce.
The launch of the UAE 6G initiative demonstrates the country’s dedication to technological advancement and global competitiveness. It reflects the UAE’s strategic vision to maintain leadership in digital transformation while preparing for future technological challenges.
Overall, this initiative positions the UAE as a pioneer in next-generation networks. By integrating AI, quantum computing, and satellite connectivity, the country sets a global example in innovation and smart society development.
