UAE Schools Limit ChatGPT to Protect Academic Integrity

Several schools in the UAE have taken steps to block ChatGPT to protect academic integrity. This move encourages independent thinking, fosters competition, and prevents students from relying on AI for assignments. Educators worry that overusing AI-powered tools could weaken problem-solving and creativity skills. Schools believe students should develop their abilities without shortcuts.

Encouraging Real Learning

To ensure real learning, schools are restricting AI use in assignments and assessments. Many institutions argue that while AI has benefits, it also creates challenges. Students who depend on ChatGPT might struggle with critical thinking and analytical skills.

Educational experts emphasize that real learning happens when students engage with materials. When AI tools provide ready-made answers, students may not fully grasp the subjects they study. Schools want students to complete their work without external assistance to ensure fair and accurate evaluations.

Raising Awareness Among Students

Schools are also working to educate students on the risks of over-reliance on AI. They are hosting workshops to teach students why they should avoid AI for academic tasks. Teachers are shifting their focus toward oral exams, research projects, and written tests to measure true abilities. These methods help ensure students develop skills needed for future success.

Experts Speak on AI Challenges

Ibrahim Baraka, Principal of Al-Shu’la Private School in Sharjah, expressed concern about ChatGPT’s impact. “ChatGPT does not understand the topics it discusses. It simply provides information without context, misleading students,” Baraka said. He stressed that depending on AI for schoolwork could harm long-term learning.

Similarly, Ibrahim Al-Thahli, a media personality, warned about the risks of AI reliance. He believes students who use AI excessively may struggle with innovation and problem-solving. “Success requires critical thinking, not just copying AI responses,” he explained.

Journalist Adel Al-Rashed also pointed out that AI tools could lead to academic dishonesty. “When students use ChatGPT for assignments, they miss essential learning opportunities,” he said.

Legal expert Fatima Al-Niyadi echoed these concerns. She emphasized that education should teach students how to think critically. “Students should analyze information, not just extract it from AI,” she stated.

New School Policies to Ensure Integrity

To maintain academic integrity, schools have introduced several policies:

  • Regular Assessments: Schools will conduct weekly evaluations without digital tools to encourage independent work.
  • AI Awareness Workshops: Schools will continue to educate students on AI risks and promote ethical academic practices.

By enforcing these policies, schools aim to ensure students develop essential skills. Encouraging independent thinking remains a top priority. Without digital shortcuts, students can build problem-solving and analytical abilities. Schools believe protecting academic integrity is the key to future success.
