UAE Marks Professional Day of Nuclear and Radiation Sector Workers

Abu Dhabi – The UAE has officially observed the Professional Day of Nuclear and Radiation Sector Workers, a day dedicated to honoring the workforce that has contributed to the nation’s nuclear energy advancements. Established by the UAE Cabinet in January 2023, the occasion celebrates the issuance of the operating license for Unit 1 of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant by the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR).

The event highlights the exceptional efforts of professionals in the nuclear and radiation sectors, who play a pivotal role in the continued success of the UAE’s Peaceful Nuclear Energy Programme. The country has emerged as a global leader, setting an example for other nations pursuing peaceful nuclear energy initiatives.

In a statement, Christer Viktorsson, Director-General of FANR, praised the dedication of nearly 20,000 professionals in the UAE’s nuclear and radiation sectors. He emphasized their vital contributions to ensuring the safe and secure use of nuclear technologies. “Their expertise and commitment are driving progress, innovation, and safeguarding both lives and the environment,” Viktorsson said.

Aligning with the UAE’s “Year of Community,” Viktorsson also noted that FANR’s regulatory role plays an essential part in protecting the public, workers, and the environment, furthering the nation’s efforts to prioritize community safety and well-being.

The UAE stands as the first country in the region to develop and operate a multi-unit nuclear power plant. The Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, comprising four units, was constructed with adherence to international safety standards and has set a global benchmark for nations aspiring to establish peaceful nuclear energy programs.
