President Barzani has played a major role in regional stability, especially in peace talks with Turkey and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). The historic call by jailed PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan to lay down arms ended a four-decade conflict. This conflict claimed tens of thousands of lives.
