Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani met the United States’ special envoy for Syria, Tom Barrack, on Sunday to discuss regional stability. Regional stability concerns have intensified amid rising tensions between Washington and Tehran following indirect negotiations mediated by Oman. During the meeting, both officials emphasized the importance of dialogue and diplomacy to resolve ongoing conflicts peacefully in the region. Sudani stressed addressing the underlying causes of regional instability to prevent aggression and protect the sovereignty of all nations involved.
The discussions also explored potential opportunities for economic cooperation to promote regional stability and sustainable development. Barrack highlighted Iraq’s crucial role in fostering solutions to regional challenges, supporting dialogue, and combating terrorism across affected areas. Both leaders recognized that regional stability depends on constructive engagement and the active participation of local governments. Sudani emphasized that lasting stability requires tackling deep-rooted political and social problems comprehensively.
Furthermore, the meeting addressed Iraq’s contributions to stabilizing neighboring Syria during ongoing conflicts. Attacks by the Syrian army and allied forces against the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces in January have caused ISIS prison breaks. As a result, Iraq received approximately 5,700 detainees transferred under US military supervision. Sudani reaffirmed Iraq’s commitment to managing these transfers responsibly while maintaining security and order in affected regions.
Both sides agreed that regional stability involves preventing further escalation between major powers, particularly in light of US military mobilization. President Donald Trump set a 10- to 15-day timeline for Iran to reach a potential agreement, warning that limited military strikes were under consideration. In response, Sudani highlighted the necessity of dialogue to prevent conflicts from expanding and worsening regional instability.
In addition, the meeting focused on long-term economic cooperation and comprehensive development initiatives that can reinforce regional stability. Barrack underscored that Iraq’s mediation could reduce tensions between international actors and create avenues for sustained peace. Sudani suggested that coordinated efforts on economic and security matters would strengthen stability in both Iraq and Syria.
By the conclusion of their discussions, both leaders had reinforced their commitment to diplomatic engagement, economic cooperation, and combating terrorism collectively. Regional stability emerged as a shared priority, with emphasis on dialogue, problem-solving, and long-term strategies to prevent future crises.
