Solar Power Boosts Green Goals at OCEC

The Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre (OCEC) has taken a major leap toward sustainability. In early 2025, it officially activated a large-scale solar rooftop system. This milestone project reflects a growing commitment to renewable energy and cleaner operations.

The solar power at OCEC project came together through a strong partnership. TotalEnergies Renewables Distributed Generation Middle East & Africa led the project in collaboration with OCEC. The OMRAN Group also provided critical support from planning to completion.

Work began right after signing the agreement in March 2024. Within months, construction teams installed 8,300 advanced solar panels across OCEC’s rooftop areas. These panels now cover 16,600 square metres of space. That’s equal to the size of two football fields or 63 tennis courts.

This bold move will generate around 25% of the Centre’s total energy. It also delivers major environmental benefits. The solar power at OCEC system will prevent about 3,300 tonnes of carbon emissions each year. Over the system’s lifetime, this amounts to 72,000 tonnes of emissions avoided.

In addition, the panels provide natural shade and help cool interior spaces. This reduces cooling costs while protecting the roof from harsh sunlight and rain. These benefits align with OCEC’s larger energy-saving goals.

The solar power at OCEC initiative fits into Oman’s Net Zero 2050 vision. It also supports the venue’s LEED Gold certification and broader sustainability efforts. OCEC has long promoted eco-friendly practices such as food donations and waste recycling. It also works closely with local suppliers and SMEs to reduce its environmental impact.

OCEC CEO Eng. Said Al Shanfari praised the project’s success. He emphasized the importance of future-ready infrastructure in today’s events industry. He also credited strong partnerships for delivering this innovative solution.

Hamady SY of TotalEnergies Renewables added his perspective. He called the project a key moment in Oman’s clean energy journey. He also highlighted the growing regional push toward renewable sources.

The solar system now powers many of OCEC’s events with clean electricity. One of the first major beneficiaries will be Oman Sustainability Week. Set for 12–15 May 2025, the event will showcase sustainable technologies—and now, run partly on them.

In conclusion, the launch of solar power at OCEC marks a powerful shift toward a greener future. It proves that strong collaboration and clear goals can create meaningful impact.
