Shura Council’s Committee Reviews Draft Law to Update National Standards and Regulations

The Shura Council’s Financial and Economic Affairs Committee, led by Khalid Hussein Al-Maskati, discussed a draft law aimed at updating the mechanism for publishing national standards and regulations. The meeting focused on amending certain provisions of Law No. (9) of 2016 on Standards and Metrology, as outlined in Decree No. (2) of 2025.

The committee carefully reviewed the objectives of the draft law, as set by the Legislation and Legal Opinion Authority. These objectives aim to enhance the current system for publishing national standards and technical regulations. Furthermore, the proposed law aims to criminalize the circulation, sale, or offer for sale of materials that falsely imply they are national standards or technical regulations. This update intends to protect the integrity of Bahrain’s standards and prevent the misuse of such symbols.

Additionally, the committee discussed the constitutional and legal aspects of the draft law. They examined the opinions of several relevant authorities, including the Ministry of Industry and Commerce and the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry. After thorough consideration, the committee concluded that the draft law is constitutionally and legally sound.

During the meeting, the committee also reviewed a report on its participation in a virtual symposium organized by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The symposium, which focused on new tariffs, provided valuable insights into the U.S. economy and economic forecasts through 2034. The spokesperson also highlighted the role of international trade and the growth of global exports over the past decade.

The committee explored the details of the new tariffs imposed by the United States. They also discussed the legal framework supporting these tariffs and their potential impact on global trade.

Ultimately, the committee recognized the importance of aligning Bahrain’s standards and regulations with international practices. By updating the national standards system, Bahrain aims to improve its position in the global market.
