Speaker of the Shura Council, His Excellency Hassan bin Abdullah Al Ghanim, met with President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Dr. Tulia Axson. The meeting was on the sidelines of the 150th General Assembly of the IPU, currently being held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
During the meeting, both sides discussed key issues on the assembly’s agenda. These included enhancing international parliamentary cooperation and the role of parliaments in addressing global challenges. They focused on humanitarian crises and regional conflicts.
The discussion also focused on strengthening partnership ties between the Shura Council and the IPU. They aimed to build on the memorandum of understanding signed in 2021. This agreement promotes capacity building and improves coordination in international parliamentary platforms.
A central point of the meeting was the deteriorating humanitarian and political situation in the occupied Palestinian territories. Al Ghanim underscored the critical role the IPU must play in promoting international peace and security. This is especially vital amid the failure of other international organizations to end ongoing conflicts.
He also highlighted an urgent item that the Arab Group plans to present at the General Assembly. They call for an immediate end to the aggression in Gaza and other occupied Palestinian areas. They also firmly reject the displacement of Palestinians.
Dr. Axson, in turn, praised Qatar’s efforts in conflict resolution. She particularly highlighted its emphasis on mediation and diplomacy and commended the Shura Council’s active stance on global humanitarian issues.
