Saudi Arabia To Lead ISO Committee on Wound Care

Saudi Arabia has been appointed to lead the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) technical committee responsible for developing global standards for wound dressings and wound compresses, becoming the first country in the region to chair the body.

The achievement follows a joint effort by the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) and the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO).

Representing the Kingdom, the SFDA will serve as the committee’s secretariat and oversee the development of international standards covering terminology, safety and performance requirements, testing methods and quality controls for wound care products.

The committee was established after the SFDA proposed creating a dedicated international framework to address the growing need for unified standards in wound care. SASO coordinated the proposal with ISO and standards organizations worldwide throughout the technical and regulatory review process.

The proposal received the backing of 27 countries, while 13 nations joined as participating members and 21 as observer members, including several leading international standards bodies.

Saudi officials said the appointment reflects growing international confidence in the Kingdom’s technical expertise and reinforces its expanding role in shaping global standards and quality systems.
