Salalah Port Transition Set for November 2028

Oman’s Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology has confirmed that Salalah Port will have a new operator after November 1, 2028. The announcement clarifies the timeline for the port’s management transition while reassuring businesses that operations and development projects will continue.

The current concession agreement with Salalah Port Services Company SAOG expires on November 1, 2028. Until then, the company will continue managing the port under the existing contractual arrangements. Meanwhile, the ministry and relevant authorities will maintain operational continuity and support ongoing development work.

The ministry said the transition forms part of its commitment to expanding and developing Salalah Port. It also stressed the importance of maintaining uninterrupted services throughout the remaining agreement period. Consequently, the management change will not immediately affect the port’s existing operations.

Authorities have not yet identified the company that will take over after the concession expires. Instead, the ministry confirmed that officials will announce the successor in due course. This leaves the selection process and the future operator’s identity undisclosed for now.

The announcement follows a disclosure from Salalah Port Services Company confirming that it will continue operating the facility until the agreement’s expiry. Both the company’s statement and the ministry’s clarification establish November 2028 as the current transition deadline. However, neither announcement names a replacement operator.

The planned Salalah Port transition comes as Oman continues to develop its transport and logistics infrastructure. As a major maritime facility, Salalah Port supports shipping activity and cargo movement through the region. Its operations also contribute to Oman’s wider ambitions to strengthen its position in international trade and logistics.

Maintaining services during a management change remains important for businesses that depend on reliable port operations. Shipping companies, logistics providers and other commercial users need clarity about service continuity and future arrangements. Therefore, the ministry’s confirmation offers a timeline while allowing existing operations to proceed.

The authorities have also indicated that development activities will continue throughout the current concession period. This means the management transition will not halt planned work before the agreement expires. Nevertheless, the ministry has not provided additional details about specific projects, investment plans or future operational priorities.

The next major step will involve identifying the operator responsible for the port after November 2028. Officials have yet to announce how the selection will proceed or when they expect to reveal the outcome. Until then, Salalah Port Services Company remains responsible for operating the facility under the existing agreement.

The Salalah Port transition establishes a clear contractual endpoint but leaves the longer-term management structure undecided publicly. Businesses can continue planning around the current agreement while awaiting further information from the ministry. Any subsequent announcement should clarify the incoming operator and the arrangements governing the next management period.

For now, Oman’s transport ministry has emphasized continuity, development and a planned change in management. Port operations will continue under the existing concession through November 1, 2028. Authorities will announce the successor operator separately as preparations for the next phase progress.
