The State of Qatar has reiterated its unwavering support for the International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism (IIIM). This mechanism assists in the investigation and prosecution of the most serious crimes committed in Syria since 2011.
In a statement presented by Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, the country emphasized that its backing of the IIIM stems from its core principles. These principles include justice, accountability, and the rule of law. Sheikha Alya highlighted Qatar’s consistent support for the aspirations of the Syrian people. Their aims include achieving justice, national reconciliation, and sustainable peace.
Qatar, alongside the Principality of Liechtenstein, played a foundational role in the establishment of the IIIM. Qatar and Liechtenstein spearheaded the creation of the International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism (IIIM) for Syria through United Nations General Assembly Resolution 71/248.
The IIIM now serves as a crucial instrument for gathering and preserving evidence of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and other serious international law violations committed in Syria.
Sheikha Alya commended the Syrian government’s constructive cooperation with the mechanism. This collaboration has enabled it to better fulfill its mandate.
The representative highlighted the mechanism’s collaboration with civil society, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), and other international entities.
Sheikha Alya reiterated Qatar’s broader commitment to preventive diplomacy, mediation, and international justice as central pillars of its foreign policy.
