Qatar affirms commitment to combating the global drug problem and stresses that international cooperation is essential to fight this threat. The country emphasizes that prevention, treatment, law enforcement, and development must work together to reduce drug-related harm.
During the 69th session of the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) in Vienna, Qatar’s Ambassador to Austria and Permanent Representative to the UN, Jassim Yaaqob Al Hamadi, delivered the nation’s statement. He noted that the World Drug Report 2025 and UNODC assessments reveal alarming growth in global drug markets. These markets are increasing in size, complexity, and technology use. For example, criminals now rely on the dark web and cryptocurrencies to conduct illicit trade.
Moreover, Al Hamadi highlighted that drug trafficking is linked to corruption, money laundering, organized crime, and terrorism. Despite these challenges, he urged the international community to act decisively. He emphasized that strong political will and coordinated measures are vital to implement legal frameworks effectively. Countries must also set clear, shared priorities to tackle the issue.
Qatar has actively supported international and regional initiatives to counter drugs. The country funds specialized programs and international organizations to strengthen national capabilities. These efforts improve collective resilience and promote a unified approach to the global drug problem.
In addition, Al Hamadi stressed the importance of multilateral cooperation. The UN, particularly the UNODC, plays a critical role in fostering coordination and solidarity. By working together, countries can dismantle criminal networks, cut off their funding, and protect communities from drug-related harm.
He also called on the global community to renew its commitment to a drug-free world. Countries should implement proactive measures, adopt shared strategies, and strengthen collaboration. These actions help break the cycle of suffering and destruction caused by illicit drugs.
Overall, Qatar affirms commitment to combating the global drug problem, showing that diplomacy, international cooperation, and practical policies are key to global security. This approach highlights Qatar’s active role in solutions and its dedication to a safer, healthier future.
