Qatar has reaffirmed its commitment to mediation as a central pillar of its foreign policy, positioning dialogue and negotiation as essential tools in addressing rising global instability.
Speaking at an event titled “The Value of Mediation” in Rome, Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al-Khulaifi outlined Doha’s approach to diplomacy amid what he described as increasing fragmentation in the international system.
The discussion, organised by the Med-Or Foundation, brought together diplomats and policy figures to examine the growing relevance of mediation in global conflict resolution at a time when unilateral approaches and geopolitical competition are becoming more pronounced.
The Qatar positions mediation at the center of global diplomacy amid growing international fragmentation reflects the country’s long-standing effort to maintain active diplomatic engagement across multiple conflict zones, including Gaza, Libya, Afghanistan, and Venezuela.
Al-Khulaifi said mediation is not intended to impose solutions but to facilitate communication between conflicting parties. He stressed that sustainable outcomes depend on trust-building and continued political engagement rather than short-term agreements.
He added that Qatar views mediation as a structured and pragmatic process, requiring an understanding of the root causes of conflict and sustained coordination among relevant actors. According to him, the success of mediation also depends on the implementation of agreements, not just their conclusion.
In recent years, Qatar has played a role in facilitating dialogue and humanitarian arrangements in several regional disputes, often working alongside international partners. Its efforts have included support for ceasefire arrangements and humanitarian exchanges in Gaza, as well as engagement in broader diplomatic channels in other conflict regions.
The minister also highlighted the interconnected nature of global instability, noting that developments in one region can quickly affect others. This perspective aligns with Qatar’s broader diplomatic strategy of maintaining communication channels across different geopolitical blocs.
The Qatar positions mediation at the center of global diplomacy amid growing international fragmentation comes as Gulf states continue to expand their diplomatic influence beyond the region, increasingly engaging in international conflict resolution and multilateral diplomacy.
