Qatar Advances Precision Medicine Through Digital Health

Qatar is accelerating its investment in digital healthcare and precision medicine, with new technologies helping improve laboratory diagnostics, genetic testing and patient care, according to Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC).

HMC said it has introduced advanced digital systems that connect laboratory equipment with electronic medical records, enabling faster and more accurate test results while improving the quality and efficiency of diagnostic services.

The initiative supports Qatar National Vision 2030, which aims to build an innovation-driven healthcare system that uses data and advanced technologies to enhance patient care and clinical decision-making.

HMC’s Chair of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, Dr. Einas Al Kuwari, said the corporation’s laboratories now conduct more than 20 million diagnostic tests each year, including around 153,000 genetic tests covering inherited disorders, cancer-related mutations, premarital screening and newborn screening.

As part of its precision medicine programme, HMC has also launched its first in-house Clinical Whole Exome Sequencing (WES) service, alongside new pharmacogenomics and thrombophilia testing to support more personalised diagnosis and treatment.

The corporation said Qatar has achieved self-sufficiency in blood supplies through strong donor participation and has introduced new technologies, including long-term preservation of rare blood types and specialised blood products for trauma patients.

HMC also highlighted advances in organ transplantation, stem cell therapy and cancer diagnostics, with laboratories using modern technologies to improve transplant outcomes, monitor patients and support early disease detection.

The healthcare provider said it is continuing to expand the use of artificial intelligence, data analytics and smart laboratory systems as part of efforts to strengthen Qatar’s healthcare sector and improve patient safety.
