Omani Court Imposes Fine on Establishment for Breaching Consumer Rights

Omani authorities reinforced their commitment to protecting consumer rights after they fined a commercial establishment in South Al Batinah. The Primary Court in Barka held the business and its owner accountable for violating the Consumer Protection Law. Officials emphasized that protecting consumer rights ensures fairness, trust, and accountability in the marketplace.

The case started when a consumer filed a complaint with the Consumer Protection Administration in Barka. He had contracted the establishment to manufacture home furniture, including sofas, beds, and curtains, for OMR 1,500. The consumer paid an advance of OMR 700 and expected the work to finish within three months.

However, the establishment failed to deliver any items. The consumer requested a refund, prompting the Public Prosecution to investigate. Investigators confirmed the breach and referred the case to the Primary Court for judgment.

During the court hearing, both sides presented their statements. The owner admitted the contract and acknowledged the delay in completing the work. The court convicted the establishment and its owner of failing to provide the agreed services properly. Consequently, the court fined each party OMR 1,000 and ordered them to refund OMR 700 to the consumer. It also awarded OMR 100 for damages and terminated the contract. The court referred the civil claim for further review.

The Consumer Protection Authority urged all companies and establishments to follow laws and regulations. Officials warned that they will take immediate action against violators. They added that protecting consumer rights remains a top priority to maintain market integrity and ensure fair treatment for every customer.

This case highlights Oman’s ongoing efforts to safeguard consumers and uphold business accountability. By strictly enforcing consumer protection laws, authorities encourage transparency and fair practices. They also remind residents and businesses to honor contracts and meet obligations to avoid penalties.

Through these actions, Oman demonstrates a strong commitment to transparency, fairness, and protecting consumer rights across all commercial sectors.
