Oman Pushes for Safer Cities Through Rapid Building Code Implementation

Oman is stepping up efforts to create safer, more resilient cities through Oman’s sustainable construction drive. The International Code Council (ICC) emphasized the urgent need for faster implementation of building codes and modern construction standards during the Urban October 2025 Expo in Muscat. The event underscored Oman’s vision for sustainability and safety in urban development.

The Urban October 2025 Expo, organized by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning, took place from October 6 to 8 at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre. The event was held alongside the Home and Building Expo, attracting local, regional, and international experts. Together, they explored new solutions to the challenges of urbanization and promoted environmentally responsible development practices.

During the expo, the Ministry launched the National Building Requirements and Standards Guide. This guide unifies safety, quality, and sustainability measures across all governorates in Oman. It serves as a national framework that promotes consistent building standards and supports innovation within the construction industry.

Furthermore, ICC’s representatives met with government officials, industry leaders, and technical experts to discuss how Oman’s sustainable construction drive can move forward. They focused on integrating advanced building regulations that prioritize human safety and environmental resilience. Participants agreed that implementing these codes quickly will help Oman meet its growing urban needs while maintaining global best practices.

In addition, ICC’s ongoing collaboration with Omani authorities continues to strengthen the construction sector. The organization has already conducted multiple workshops and training sessions throughout 2024 and 2025. These initiatives aim to equip engineers, contractors, and regulators with the tools needed to improve building safety and innovation.

Moreover, the event highlighted the importance of public awareness in achieving long-term sustainability goals. Experts encouraged developers and citizens alike to adopt green construction methods and support national policies designed to enhance resilience.

As Oman’s sustainable construction drive gains momentum, the country is positioning itself as a regional leader in responsible urban growth. With international partnerships and a clear commitment to safety, Oman’s cities are on track to become smarter, safer, and more sustainable than ever before.
