Oman Launches Survey to Track Digital Economy Growth

Oman has launched a crucial survey to measure the contribution of its digital economy to the national GDP in 2023. This initiative aligns with the country’s ambitious goal of increasing the digital economy’s share of GDP to 10% by 2040. The survey is an essential part of Oman’s broader efforts to boost its digital economy and enhance the role of technology in the national growth.

The survey will focus on gathering data on digital services, such as communications, information technology (IT), and financial services. This data will be vital for policymakers to make informed decisions that can further drive the digital economy. The survey will offer valuable insights into the current status of digital services in Oman, including how much they contribute to the national GDP, the added value of these services, and investment trends in digital infrastructure.

Hamad bin Nasser Al Shikaili, the Director of the Survey Project at the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology, highlighted the importance of private sector cooperation. He emphasized that collaboration with private businesses is crucial for the success of this survey. It will help officials understand not only the contributions of these sectors but also employment trends and growth potential.

The survey targets 1,300 private sector establishments across Oman. It will include businesses involved in the ICT sector and digital financial services. The results will offer comparisons with regional and international trends, contributing to Oman’s digital economy roadmap and future strategies.

In addition to the survey, Oman has recently launched the Unified Government Services Portal (gov.om). This portal simplifies access to nearly 100 government services for citizens, residents, and businesses. The platform eliminates the need for multiple websites and provides a streamlined process for service requests. The second phase of the portal, expected to launch between March and June, will include even more services. This initiative highlights Oman’s commitment to its digital economy goals and improving service delivery to its citizens.

Together, the survey and portal represent key steps toward enhancing Oman’s digital infrastructure and supporting its growth as a leader in the digital economy. These measures will provide vital information for shaping policies and improving services for all sectors of the economy.
