Oman Highlights Geographical Names at UN Session

Oman is actively engaging in international dialogue through its participation in the 2025 UNGEGN session in New York. Meanwhile, the National Survey and Geospatial Information Authority represents Oman at this global event. This year’s session, in particular, focuses on the cultural importance of names and the global standardization of spelling. In addition, officials also examined modern methods for documenting and managing names more efficiently. As a result, Oman contributed key insights into the geographical names system through various reports and presentations.

During the session, Oman showcased its national progress in documenting names from 2023 to 2025. Furthermore, the delegation also presented a working paper discussing the Arabic-to-Latin transliteration process. Through a visual presentation, Oman explained how the Unified Arab System supports regional naming consistency. Additionally, Omani officials joined the Arab Division’s side meeting to strengthen cooperation among Arab nations. Altogether, this shows Oman’s strong commitment to the geographical names system and regional unity.

The conference, consequently, brought attention to how names reflect heritage and strengthen national identity. Oman emphasized that standardizing names promotes clarity in both domestic and global communication. Moreover, Omani experts highlighted how the geographical names system contributes to long-term cultural preservation. They also urged international counterparts to adopt unified strategies and harness AI tools for better name management. Therefore, these steps could help avoid duplication and ensure more accurate mapping.

Technology, likewise, played a key role throughout the discussions on naming practices and data management. For instance, Oman described how it uses modern tools to collect, verify, and store geographical names. Officials noted that artificial intelligence increases speed and precision in the naming process. With AI and digital maps, Oman strengthens the foundation of its geographical names system. Consequently, the country now encourages others to blend tradition with innovation in similar ways.

Looking ahead, Oman plans to expand its international role in naming discussions. Furthermore, the delegation believes shared standards can build stronger ties between global regions. Through forums like UNGEGN, Oman promotes collaboration and cultural respect. It will continue improving its geographical names system through innovation and regional teamwork. Ultimately, this approach ensures that heritage remains relevant in a digital world.
