During the 69th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, Oman made its strong stance clear on global issues. The session is being held in New York from March 10 to March 21.
The Omani delegation, led by H E Dr. Laila bint Ahmed al Najjar, Minister of Social Development, delivered a powerful speech. In her address, Dr. Laila emphasized Oman’s firm commitment to empowering women and promoting their roles in various sectors. She specifically focused on strengthening partnerships within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries to further these goals.
Oman strongly condemned Israel’s actions in the occupied Palestinian territories. Dr. Laila cited the severe violations of international law by Israel. She referred to these actions as war crimes, crimes against humanity, torture, and even genocide. Furthermore, Oman condemned the ongoing violence in Sudan. The Minister particularly pointed out the atrocities faced by women and girls in Sudan, highlighting the multiple abuses they endure in the conflict.
Dr. Laila also addressed the wider impact of these conflicts. She warned that wars and crises don’t only affect the directly involved nations. They trigger forced migration, displacement, and disruption in vital services like healthcare, education, and security.
On the domestic front, Oman has been making significant strides. Dr. Laila discussed Oman’s efforts to enhance its educational and vocational infrastructure. These efforts include better facilities, digital laboratories, and academic specializations aligned with labor market demands. In the 2024/2025 academic year, Omani women made notable strides in science and technology. Women now represent 57.7% of students in pure mathematics, 57.2% in chemistry, and 32.8% in physics.
She reaffirmed Oman’s commitment to fostering scientific innovation among women. This will not only contribute to Oman’s development but also to regional and global advancements.
Dr. Laila also praised recent political and legislative reforms in Arab countries. These reforms have expanded women’s roles in education, healthcare, and politics. She stressed that Oman continues to support women’s leadership and decision-making roles in all sectors.
