The Katara Al Nahma Festival and Award – Naham Al Khaleej 2025 officially opened at Katara Beach. It was inaugurated by Prof Dr. Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti, General Manager of the Cultural Village Foundation – Katara.
The event drew a crowd of maritime heritage and folk arts enthusiasts. They celebrated the Gulf’s deep-rooted connection to its seafaring past. Al Sulaiti described the festival as a cultural initiative that embodies Katara’s dedication to preserving and revitalizing authentic artistic traditions.
Al Nahma is more than a sea chant—it is the voice of Gulf societies. It expresses the emotions of a people shaped by the sea and its challenges,” he said. He added that the festival brings together a select group of Nahham performers from across the region. They participate in an artistic competition that honors shared heritage.
The opening featured a performance by the Bahrain Children’s Band. The festival runs from April 13 to 15, with daily programs from 6 pm to 10 pm. A total of 17 Nahamas from six Gulf countries are participating: 4 from Qatar, 1 from Saudi Arabia, and 3 each from Kuwait, the UAE, Oman, and Bahrain.
Highlights include cultural seminars and performances. On the second day, Kuwaiti researcher Abdul Hamid Al-Saqr will present “Rhythmic Arts among the Gulf States – Haddadi Arts.” Bahraini artist Youssef Adam will present “Working Arts between the Sea and the Night.” The third day will feature a seminar by Qatari researcher Abdul Hamid Al Yousef on “The Function of the Nahham and His Role on the Mahmal.” This will be followed by the final round of the competition and a closing performance by the Al Qalail Troupe. Winners will be honored.
These feature a live drawing competition, fine arts and photography exhibitions, and a marine heritage display documenting traditional diving and fishing.
