Kuwait has recently taken significant steps to bolster its tourism sector. Basmah Al-Mayman, Director of the Middle East Regional Department at the World Tourism Organization (WTO), highlighted the country’s growing role in global tourism. Kuwait’s election as president of the WTO’s Regional Committee for the Middle East marks a historic achievement. It is the first time the country has held this position.
As a founding member of the WTO, Kuwait’s unanimous election as president reflects the trust and support it enjoys from other countries in the region. This new role positions Kuwait as a key player in shaping tourism policies not just within the Middle East, but also globally. The country will be responsible for establishing tourism strategies. These strategies will be presented to other regions within the WTO’s broader framework.
Al-Mayman noted that Kuwait’s focus on developing its tourism sector is evident. This can be seen in its efforts to make tourism a vital part of its economy, particularly in diversifying away from oil reliance. She emphasized Kuwait’s commitment to enhancing its tourism infrastructure. This includes attracting global visitors by offering new and improved services.
One notable achievement is the successful hosting of the Gulf Cup Football Championship (Gulf 26). This event set a high standard for organizing major events. The championship helped elevate the hospitality sector, and hotel occupancy rates surpassed 99%, benefiting tourism-related businesses across the country. These efforts highlight Kuwait’s dedication to growing its tourism industry. This sets the stage for more international events and fosters a welcoming environment for global visitors.
