A power outage affected several areas of Kuwait on Sunday after a sudden flashover disrupted a major electrical substation. The Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy said the incident began inside one of the substation’s main transformers.
The sudden electrical fault triggered the station’s protection systems, which immediately disconnected the entire facility. Officials said the automatic shutdown helped protect important components and prevent further damage across the electricity network.
As a result, several connected substations operating at 132 kilovolts and 33 kilovolts also stopped functioning temporarily. The disruption affected approximately 414 megawatts of electrical loads across several residential areas.
The affected locations included Salwa, Rumaithiya, Al-Bidaa, Mishref, Bayan, Mubarak Al-Abdullah, and Sabah Al-Salem. Residents in those areas experienced interruptions while emergency and technical teams worked to identify and isolate the problem.
Ministry spokesperson Fatima Jawhar Hayat said specialised teams responded immediately after authorities identified the electrical fault. Their work focused on isolating the affected equipment and checking the condition of the substation’s critical components.
Meanwhile, technicians began restoring the main substation and its connected facilities through a controlled recovery process. They gradually reconnected electrical loads to reduce risks and maintain stability across the wider grid.
The coordinated response allowed electricity services to return to all affected areas relatively quickly. However, authorities continued monitoring the major substation after completing the immediate restoration process.
Technical teams also began detailed inspections to establish exactly what caused the transformer flashover. Officials said the investigation would help determine whether additional technical measures were necessary.
The ministry explained that engineers would assess the transformer and associated equipment during the inspection. They will also examine the circumstances surrounding the sudden fault and evaluate the condition of other components.
