Kuwait and ICRC Strengthen Humanitarian Partnerships with New Initiatives

Kuwait reinforced its humanitarian cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) during the fourth strategic dialogue. The high-level meeting took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and focused on advancing long-term initiatives. It also highlighted Kuwait’s commitment to aiding vulnerable populations worldwide.

The Kuwaiti delegation was led by Deputy Foreign Minister Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah. ICRC President Mirjana Spoljaric Egger headed the organization’s team. Both sides discussed the enduring partnership between Kuwait and the ICRC, which spans over three decades. They emphasized respecting international humanitarian law and protecting civilians during conflicts.

Officials reviewed the ICRC’s role in following up on Kuwaiti prisoners of war and missing persons. They also discussed efforts to implement UN Security Council Resolution 2474 on missing persons in armed conflicts. Kuwait submitted the resolution during its 2018-2019 Security Council tenure.

Several agreements were signed to advance humanitarian projects. The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development provided a grant to the ICRC for health services and clean water programs in Somalia. The Kuwait Red Crescent Society (KRCS) and ICRC also agreed to sustain healthcare programs in Sudan. The session concluded with a joint declaration reaffirming Kuwait and ICRC commitments.

Spoljaric Egger praised Kuwait’s leadership in relief efforts. She highlighted the KRCS as a key partner enabling ICRC’s work in Gaza, Syria, and other regions. She also discussed future frameworks for cooperation in crisis zones, including Yemen.

KRCS Chairman Khaled Al-Mughamis emphasized Kuwait’s dedication to strengthening international partnerships. He noted that humanitarian work faces rising challenges. Coordinated global responses and timely aid remain essential for people affected by conflicts and disasters. Al-Mughamis highlighted ongoing support for populations in Gaza, Syria, and Sudan and stressed sharing expertise to improve humanitarian efficiency.

This dialogue underscores Kuwait’s focus on humanitarian cooperation. By funding initiatives and enhancing partnerships, Kuwait strengthens its global humanitarian impact. The country continues to support vulnerable communities worldwide through effective collaboration.
