Iraq’s Tourism Boom: Revenues Hit $5.7 Billion Amid Rapid Growth

Iraq’s tourism growth has entered a new phase, transforming the country into one of the fastest-rising travel destinations in the region. As new figures show, tourism revenues jumped to $5.7 billion in 2024, marking a major leap for Iraq’s economy.

According to economic expert Nabil Al-Marsoumi, Iraq’s tourism profits increased by 25 percent compared to the previous year. Revenues rose from $4.6 billion in 2023 to $5.7 billion in 2024, signaling a strong rebound supported by improved security and infrastructure, contributing significantly to Iraq’s tourism growth.

Across the Arab world, Iraq now ranks seventh in tourism revenue. It follows the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Morocco, Qatar, and Jordan. Although Iraq’s tourism market remains smaller, analysts believe the country is on track to close the gap as visitor numbers surge every month.

Moreover, Iraq’s tourism growth is drawing global attention. Late in 2024, the government confirmed that Baghdad was selected as the 2025 Arab Tourism Capital. Officials said this recognition highlights Baghdad’s ancient charm, diverse heritage, and vibrant modern life. The title also strengthens Iraq’s position among other leading Arab destinations.

Tourism officials emphasized that stability across provinces has encouraged foreign and domestic travel. Hotels, archaeological sites, and pilgrimage centers reported steady increases in visitors. As a result, more private investors are eagerly contributing to Iraq’s tourism growth by launching projects in Baghdad, Karbala, Najaf, and Babylon.

The Arab Tourism Organization (ATO) also praised Iraq’s efforts to expand its tourism footprint. During meetings with Iraqi leaders, the organization supported a proposal to open an Arab Tourism Academy in Baghdad. The academy aims to train a new generation of tourism professionals and promote cultural exchange between Arab countries.

Additionally, Iraq’s historical sites such as Babylon, Ur, and Nineveh continue to attract scholars and travelers from around the world. These destinations highlight Iraq’s deep history while showcasing its potential for sustainable cultural tourism.

In short, Iraq’s tourism growth represents more than economic progress—it reflects national revival. With expanding infrastructure, international recognition, and strong public enthusiasm, Iraq’s tourism sector appears ready for an even brighter future.
