Iraqi Line Resumes Shipping After Decades

Iraq has revived a long-dormant maritime shipping service after its cargo vessel Basra arrived at Umm Qasr Port on Sunday. The arrival marks the return of the Iraqi Line’s commercial operations after decades of inactivity. The ship carried containers from the United Arab Emirates, strengthening an important trade connection between both countries.

Ahmed Jassim, director general of the State Company for Maritime Transport, confirmed the vessel’s arrival. He said the Basra sailed from Jebel Ali Port in the UAE before reaching Iraq’s principal commercial port. The voyage represents a significant step toward restoring regular maritime transport links for Iraqi businesses and traders.

According to the Ministry of Transport, the restored service aims to increase cargo movement between Iraqi and Emirati ports. Furthermore, it will give importers and exporters additional options for transporting goods. Businesses may benefit from greater flexibility when arranging shipments and managing their supply chains.

The resumption also offers an opportunity to strengthen Iraq’s commercial maritime operations. By restoring the Iraqi Line’s service, authorities aim to expand shipping connections and support the movement of imported and exported products. However, officials have not provided a detailed schedule for future voyages or confirmed how frequently the vessel will operate.

The Basra’s arrival comes as the UAE remains an important source of Iraq’s non-oil imports. According to Iraq’s General Authority for Statistics and Geographic Information Systems, the UAE accounted for 8.1 percent of Iraq’s non-oil goods imports in 2025. This placed the Emirates third among Iraq’s import sources, following China and Iran.

These trade figures highlight the commercial importance of maintaining reliable transport links between the two countries. In particular, maritime shipping can provide traders with another way to move containerized goods through established regional ports. Additionally, expanded shipping options may help businesses plan logistics around their commercial needs.

The return of the Iraqi Line could also support efforts to develop the country’s maritime transport sector. A stronger shipping network can connect Iraqi ports with regional trading hubs and offer companies alternatives for moving merchandise. Nevertheless, the long-term impact will depend on service continuity, shipping capacity and demand from commercial customers.

Umm Qasr Port serves as a key gateway for Iraq’s international maritime trade. Meanwhile, Jebel Ali Port provides a major shipping connection in the UAE. The Basra’s voyage between these facilities demonstrates the practical role that direct maritime links can play in bilateral commerce.

For now, the arrival confirms that the Iraqi Line has resumed commercial shipping activity after a lengthy interruption. The Ministry of Transport expects the service to support trade and improve shipping choices. Future operations will determine how significantly the restored route contributes to cargo movement between Iraq and the UAE.
