Iraqi Lawmakers File Anti-Corruption Complaint Against PM Al-Sudani Ahead of Elections

Iraqi lawmakers have filed a significant complaint against Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, citing electoral misconduct allegations. The complaint reached the Anti-Corruption Court on Sunday through Iraq’s Public Prosecution.

According to the official document, six members of parliament claim that al-Sudani misused his office to gain political advantage. The allegations focus on activities leading up to the November 11 parliamentary elections.

The MPs argue that al-Sudani created a political alliance called the Reconstruction and Development Coalition. They further claim he distributed land and official commendations to state employees. Lawmakers argue that these actions violated Iraq’s “Election Integrity Document,” signed on August 18 by the presidency, cabinet, parliament, and judiciary.

The agreement clearly forbids public officials from exploiting government resources or their positions for campaign purposes. Lawmakers insist these measures ensure fair competition during elections.

The complaint emphasizes that al-Sudani’s actions could undermine trust in the electoral process. This referral is particularly notable as it occurs less than a month before Iraq heads to the polls. Authorities have reportedly intensified scrutiny of all candidates in response.

If the Anti-Corruption Court decides to proceed, this case could become Iraq’s first formal investigation into a sitting prime minister for electoral misconduct allegations since 2003. The outcome could have major political consequences and influence public opinion.

Al-Sudani has not yet issued a response to the complaint. Meanwhile, political observers note that he remains a key figure within the Coordination Framework, a Shiite alliance that won around 130 seats in the October 2021 elections. Analysts suggest that the timing of the complaint might also affect his coalition’s strategy ahead of the upcoming vote.

The case has drawn widespread attention both domestically and internationally. Citizens and political commentators are closely following the developments. The focus on electoral misconduct allegations reflects Iraq’s broader effort to enforce transparency and accountability in public office.

As the November elections approach, this complaint highlights the increasing tension between lawmakers and the executive branch. The Anti-Corruption Court’s decisions in the coming weeks could shape Iraq’s political landscape.
