Iraq Supports Lebanese Sovereignty Amid Israeli Attacks

Iraq’s Prime Minister has strongly criticized Israel for its repeated attacks on Lebanese territory. These airstrikes have continued even after a ceasefire was announced, raising concern across the region. The Iraqi leader made his remarks during a meeting with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, who visited Baghdad for the first time since taking office.

During a joint press event, the Iraqi Prime Minister emphasized the importance of respecting Lebanon’s sovereignty. He called the Israeli operations clear violations of international law. The leader urged for the complete enforcement of a United Nations Security Council resolution aimed at ending hostilities in the region. This resolution originally concluded the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah and now underpins the latest truce.

That agreement required Hezbollah to move its fighters north of the Litani River. Israel, in return, was supposed to withdraw from all Lebanese territories. However, Israel has continued to hold several positions it considers strategically important. These actions have sparked fresh tensions and drawn criticism from Iraq and other regional powers.

Iraqi-Lebanese solidarity formed a central theme during Aoun’s visit. Both leaders discussed various opportunities to deepen cooperation. Energy, telecommunications, and trade stood out as key areas for future collaboration. The leaders also reviewed the support Iraq has extended to Lebanon during recent crises.

Iraq has long backed Lebanon during difficult times. Thousands of Lebanese, mostly Shiite Muslims, have found refuge in Iraq following recent conflicts. In addition, Iraq has delivered much-needed fuel to help Lebanon’s struggling power sector. Iraqi-Lebanese solidarity has become even more important amid Lebanon’s ongoing economic collapse.

Baghdad recently promised to send over 300,000 tons of wheat to help ease Lebanon’s food shortage. These gestures reflect Iraq’s commitment to a strong partnership. President Aoun expressed his deep appreciation for Iraq’s ongoing assistance. He praised Iraq’s humanitarian role and called for further strengthening of diplomatic and economic ties.

The visit highlighted Iraqi-Lebanese solidarity once again. As Israeli airstrikes escalate tensions, Iraq continues to position itself as a reliable ally to Lebanon. Through both political and material support, Iraq affirms its backing for Lebanese sovereignty.
