Iraq Strengthens Ties with Oman in Strategic Two-Day Visit

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani traveled to Oman on Wednesday, emphasizing Iraq-Oman cooperation from the start. He leads a senior government delegation for a two-day visit aimed at enhancing political, economic, and regional ties.

According to Oman’s state news agency, al-Sudani will hold extensive discussions directly with the Sultan. Sources indicate that the talks will focus on regional security, de-escalation efforts, and strengthening ties with neighboring countries, especially Iran and Israel.

Before departure at Baghdad International Airport, al-Sudani outlined the agenda. He highlighted agreements on energy, tourism, oil storage, refining, industrial and defense production, maritime transport, and port management. Additionally, discussions will include scientific research, education, trade exchange, export development, competition, anti-monopoly measures, radio and television cooperation, telecommunications, and housing and urban planning.

Al-Sudani also emphasized youth employment as a top priority. He encouraged Omani businesses to partner closely with Iraqi companies, citing the expertise and ambition of Iraq’s young population. “Our youth sector is full of expertise, strength, and ambition for a promising future,” he stated. This focus underlines Iraq-Oman cooperation in developing sustainable opportunities for both countries’ young workforce.

Economic collaboration remains a key pillar of the visit. The Prime Minister stressed coordination between Iraq’s Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Oman’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry. This framework will expand trade, investment, and business partnerships.

The invitation for this high-level visit was originally extended on December 21, 2024, by Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi during a visit to Baghdad. Since then, both governments have prepared an extensive agenda to ensure concrete outcomes.

During the two-day visit, both sides are expected to sign agreements promoting Iraq-Oman cooperation in multiple sectors. Experts believe these initiatives could set a precedent for deeper regional collaboration. The visit also reinforces Iraq’s commitment to balancing diplomacy with economic growth and stability.

Overall, the visit highlights Iraq’s proactive approach to international engagement. By fostering Iraq-Oman cooperation, the government aims to boost security, trade, and investment, while creating more opportunities for the youth.
