Iraq Moves Toward Political Maturity Ahead of 2025 Elections

Iraq is entering a defining chapter marked by political maturity in Iraq, according to Ammar al-Hakim, leader of the National State Forces Alliance. Speaking at the MERI Forum 2025 in Erbil, he said the country’s upcoming parliamentary elections represent a milestone toward stability and progress.

The MERI Forum, held under the theme “Shaping the Future: Visions for Peace and Prosperity,” gathered political leaders, scholars, and reform advocates. During the event, al-Hakim said Iraq’s democratic journey has evolved since 2003. The nation’s shift from a totalitarian regime to a pluralistic democracy continues despite many challenges.

He explained that Iraq has faced immense difficulties over the past two decades, including conflict and economic struggles. Yet the country continues to strengthen its institutions and grow politically. This progress, he said, reflects political maturity in Iraq.

Al-Hakim described the upcoming November 11 parliamentary elections as a turning point. He said the vote will determine Iraq’s next government and deepen its democratic roots. He emphasized that this election focuses on stability, national unity, and rebuilding trust between people and institutions.

The National State Forces Alliance won four seats in the 2021 elections. It positions itself as a moderate Shiite bloc that advocates reform and cooperation. The group aims to bridge divisions and promote inclusion through dialogue and shared goals.

According to al-Hakim, the 2005 elections built the foundation for democracy. The 2025 vote, he added, will strengthen those foundations and move the nation closer to lasting stability. He mentioned that Iraq now shows signs of political consistency, economic recovery, and improving regional ties.

While election day approaches, expectations are rising. Many Iraqis hope for change and progress. They believe the upcoming vote will reflect their desire for stronger leadership and fair governance. With growing reform efforts and political maturity in Iraq, optimism is returning to the public sphere.

The 2025 elections are widely seen as a test of Iraq’s ability to overcome division. They will show whether the country can build a stable, inclusive system that represents the will of its people.
