India has detained five Pakistani nationals after intercepting an Iranian boat carrying heroin and methamphetamine worth about $338 million. The Drug Seizure took place west of Lakshadweep following an intelligence-led maritime operation on September 25.
The Indian Coast Guard worked with Gujarat’s Anti-Terrorist Squad during the operation, targeting a suspicious vessel moving through the Arabian Sea. Authorities said the operation followed actionable intelligence concerning a vessel suspected of transporting a major narcotics shipment.
Coast Guard ships and aircraft monitored the vessel during a coordinated sea-air surveillance operation. The surveillance allowed security personnel to track the dhow before authorities launched a hot pursuit.
After reaching waters west of Lakshadweep, Indian authorities intercepted the Iranian vessel and boarded it. Five Pakistani nationals operating the vessel were detained during the operation, according to authorities.
Officials seized approximately 526 kilograms of heroin and methamphetamine from the boat. Authorities estimated the shipment’s international market value at more than Rs3,000 crore, equivalent to approximately Rs30 billion.
Following the interception, authorities transported the vessel, crew and seized narcotics to Mumbai under armed escort. Several agencies then began joint questioning and legal procedures connected with the operation.
Meanwhile, investigators are examining the wider trafficking network behind the large shipment. Their investigation will focus on the drugs’ origin, the financing behind the consignment and its intended recipients.
Authorities will also examine how the Iranian vessel became involved in the suspected trafficking operation. Investigators may also determine whether additional vessels or individuals supported the shipment’s movement.
However, authorities have not presented evidence connecting the Iranian government to the seized narcotics. The nationality of the vessel therefore remains a separate issue from determining responsibility for the shipment.
The Drug Seizure also highlights the continued use of maritime routes for transporting large quantities of illegal narcotics. Criminal networks have increasingly used sea routes to move heroin and synthetic drugs across international waters.
Furthermore, Indian security agencies have increased their focus on maritime trafficking networks operating through the Arabian Sea. Such operations seek to prevent narcotics from reaching mainland markets while disrupting the financial structures supporting trafficking groups.
The Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad confirmed the detention of the five Pakistani nationals involved in the operation. Authorities are expected to provide additional information as investigators continue examining the shipment and its suspected network.
The operation also demonstrated the role of coordinated surveillance in detecting suspicious maritime activity. Aircraft and vessels worked together to maintain contact with the dhow before security personnel moved to intercept it.
Investigators now face the task of identifying the wider network responsible for arranging the shipment. They will examine its financing, supply chain, intended destination and possible links with other maritime operations.
The Drug Seizure represents a significant narcotics interception for Indian authorities, given the quantity and estimated value involved. Further investigation will determine how the shipment moved through the Arabian Sea and who ultimately stood behind it.
