ICAO Council approves second phase of Doha Flight Information Region implementation

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council has approved Qatar’s implementation of Phase Two of the Doha Flight Information Region (FIR) and Upper Information Region (UIR). This follows the successful completion of Phase One. The new phase also covers the management of the Search and Rescue Region (SRR). It marks a significant step in advancing Qatar’s airspace modernization.

Phase Two includes the management of air traffic over international waters north of Qatar. It extends vertically from sea level to unlimited altitude. This development is expected to bring wide-ranging benefits. These benefits include improved safety, environmental protection, and enhanced operational efficiency. It also supports reduced fuel consumption and emissions. Additionally, this leads to increased airspace capacity and greater flexibility for airlines operating in the region.

According to Qatar’s Minister of Transport, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Thani, this approval reflects Qatar’s growing stature in the global aviation industry. He emphasized that the country’s progress over recent years has positioned Doha as a key strategic hub in international air travel.

“The ICAO Council’s approval to move forward with Phase Two is a significant milestone. It builds on our achievements from Phase One. It also reinforces global confidence in our technical and operational readiness,” the Minister stated.

He added that the new phase aligns with Qatar’s broader goal of creating a modern civil aviation system. This is in accordance with the nation’s vision and international best practices.

With Phase Two now in effect, Qatar is expected to further boost regional and global connectivity. It will streamline flight operations and enhance its role in shaping the future of airspace management.
