Food Demand During Ramadan: Market Preparations

As the holy month of Ramadan nears, Omani markets are seeing a sharp increase in purchasing activity. Retailers are bracing for heightened demand, especially for essential food items such as fruits and vegetables. To ensure sufficient supplies during this busy period, various stakeholders are actively working to manage the increased demand.

Increased Supply of Produce to Meet Demand

Othman bin Ali al Hatali, Director of Operations at the Central Fruits and Vegetables Market (Silal), provided details on their preparations. From February 10 to 17, 2025, 236 trucks delivered 5,970 tons of imported fruits and vegetables to the market. Additionally, 3,160 tons of local agricultural products arrived to ensure that supply would meet Ramadan’s food demand.

Optimized Market Operations to Improve Efficiency

To streamline operations, Silal has set specific delivery schedules. Wholesale goods will arrive between 4 am and 2 pm, while local agricultural products will be delivered in two shifts: from 4 am to 1 pm and from 5 pm to 11 pm. These hours will remain in effect throughout the week, except for Fridays. This schedule ensures smooth processing and maintains the steady flow of goods.

Health and Safety Protocols Remain a Priority

Health and safety standards are paramount, especially during the Ramadan rush. Silal’s team is committed to ensuring that hygiene standards are continuously met. Furthermore, they collaborate closely with various government bodies, including the Royal Oman Police and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources. Over 180 product samples have already been tested for safety, maintaining high-quality produce for consumers.

Monitoring Prices and Preventing Price Manipulation

The Directorate General of Consumer Protection Authority in Dhofar Governorate is also stepping up its efforts to prevent price manipulation during Ramadan. It will monitor commodity prices, prevent expired goods from being sold, and conduct surveys to stop misleading promotional offers. Health authorities, including the Dhofar Municipality’s Health Control Department, are launching inspection campaigns. These campaigns focus on meat sales, bakeries, and restaurants to ensure food establishments follow health regulations.

Supporting Families with Ramadan Basket Initiative

In addition to ensuring a steady food supply, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources has reassured the public that live meat and fish will remain available throughout Ramadan. The Consumer Protection Authority (CPA) is also focusing on preventing price manipulation and deceptive advertising. To support low-income families, the CPA has launched the “Ramadan Basket” initiative. This initiative offers discounted food baskets to help reduce financial strain during the holy month.
