Erbil Files Protest Over Iranian Consul’s Threats Amid Regional Tensions

The Erbil protest over threats highlights rising diplomatic tensions in the Kurdistan Region. Officials formally responded to statements made by Iran’s incoming Consul General. They emphasized that the threats challenge the Region’s constitutional status and sovereignty.

On Tuesday, the Kurdistan Regional Government delivered a formal letter of protest to the Iranian Consulate in Erbil. The Department of Foreign Relations explained the complaint targets comments by Sayyid Mohammad Mir Hosseini. Hosseini claimed Tehran would continue striking sites linked to the United States, Israel, and Iranian Kurdish opposition groups. These sites, he said, are “legitimate targets.”

Authorities stressed that the Erbil protest over threats reflects the Region’s refusal to tolerate external intimidation. Kurdish officials have repeatedly stated that the Region is not part of the ongoing US-Israel-Iran conflict. Moreover, they vowed to prevent Kurdish territory from serving as a launchpad for attacks.

The Kurdistan Region has faced hundreds of drone and missile strikes since late February. According to Rudaw tracking, Erbil province alone endured 540 attacks. Sulaimani recorded 111 strikes, Halabja two, and northern Duhok 25. These attacks came despite Kurdish assurances of neutrality.

The broader context involves the US and Israel launching a coordinated campaign against Iran on February 28. CENTCOM confirmed its forces struck over 13,000 targets in Iran, including 155 Iranian vessels. CENTCOM Commander Brad Cooper stated the operations aim to limit Iran’s regional power projection.

In response, Tehran has carried out thousands of retaliatory attacks across the Middle East. Iran’s allied Iraqi armed groups have claimed responsibility for targeting alleged US assets, including locations within the Kurdistan Region. These developments have intensified concerns about regional stability.

Kurdish authorities emphasized the importance of international law and diplomacy. They hope the Erbil protest over threats signals a strong stance against violations of sovereignty. Officials also continue monitoring regional developments closely to protect citizens.

The Erbil protest over threats underscores the Region’s commitment to defending its constitutional rights. It also reflects the ongoing challenges posed by complex regional conflicts and cross-border hostilities.
