Dubai is set to take the spotlight in City of Life: Continuum, the much-anticipated sequel to Ali F Mostafa’s 2009 film City of Life. The filmmaker confirmed the project on February 26, emphasizing how Dubai’s culture shines through its evolving skyline and diverse communities.
Backed by a major production house, the film will showcase Dubai as more than just a glamorous city. Mostafa believes the time is right for a sequel that reflects the current reality of life in the UAE.
“It’s been 17 years since the first film, and today’s residents deserve a story that represents their experience,” said Mostafa. “The city has changed, and many newcomers might not have seen City of Life, but they deserve a film they can connect with and take pride in.”
Unlike many portrayals that focus solely on luxury, Mostafa wants to depict Dubai’s authentic side. “It’s a real city with real challenges, but we always find solutions. That’s what I want to highlight in this film.”
The sequel will continue showcasing Dubai’s multicultural essence. Confirmed cast members include Egyptian actor Nour Nabawy, Emirati talents Saoud Al Kaabi and Habib Ghuloom, Austrian actor Kayode Akinyemi, British-American star Elodie Grace, and Chinese-Australian actress Lin Yin.
“The city is global, and its films should reflect that. I’m grateful to have built strong industry connections, allowing me to bring in incredible international talent,” Mostafa added.
Although the sequel follows similar themes, viewers won’t need to have seen City of Life to enjoy City of Life: Continuum.
Mostafa also shared his views on the UAE’s film industry, acknowledging both its struggles and future potential. “The industry didn’t grow as expected. It started strong but then plateaued. We had a major film festival that nurtured local talent, but it disappeared. However, with recent developments in media and entertainment, I believe we are on the verge of something great.”
When asked about returning actors, Mostafa hinted that Bollywood’s Sonu Sood and British actor Jason Flemyng may reprise their roles but confirmed that Indian actor Jaaved Jaaferi would definitely return.
One of the new additions, actress Lin Yin, expressed her excitement about joining a film that represents Dubai’s vibrant culture. “I’ve never seen a place like Dubai. The mix of people and cultures is fascinating. The story really connected with me because it’s about real people,” she said.
Lin also teased action sequences in the film. “I have a rehearsal with the stunt coordinator soon, which is exciting. I’ve trained in martial arts and dance before, so it will be fun to incorporate that into my role.”
Filming for City of Life: Continuum began on February 17. Industry leaders view this as a milestone for UAE cinema.
“This film is a testament to the city’s vision of elevating the industry to new heights,” said a top executive from the production team. “It’s not just a movie—it’s a cultural moment for Dubai and the UAE.”
With a compelling story, a diverse cast, and a strong creative vision, this sequel is shaping up to be a landmark in UAE filmmaking. Dubai’s culture shines once again on the big screen, celebrating the city’s unique blend of heritage and modernity.
